Department was established under the leadership of Dr O.P. Gupta and was fortunate enough to have Dr. S.J. Nagalotimath from 1991 to 1993 at the helm of the affairs. From 1993 to 2000, the Department was successfully headed by Dr. S. S. Jigjini who later became Principal from 2000 to 2004 and was honored with the responsibility of the first Vice-Chancellor of BLDE University Bijapur from 2004 to 2010. Dr. B. R. Yelikar successfully headed the responsibility of the Department from 2000 to 2019 followed by Dr. Surekha. U. Arakeri

From 2023 to till date responsibility of heading the Department is being carried out by Dr.Surekha B Hippargi with the help of dedicated & cordial staff. Department is actively involved in the area of research with 42 publications in indexed journals to its credit in the last five years (2019-23) and 10 research projects funded by university. Dr. Surekha. B. Hippargi and Dr. Vijayalaxmi S. Patil were part of the international collaborative project with JHPIEGO-NIH, USA and JNMC, Belagavi titled “Performance safety and Efficacy of a new cryotherapy device for cervical dysplasia (CRYOPOP).

Dr. Surekha. B. Hippargi has extramural grant from VGST for the project titled “Implementation of mobile camps for cervical cancer screening” in the year 2018-2019. Dr. Surekha B. Hippargi ,Dr. Surekha U. Arakeri, Dr Mamatha K and Dr Sneha Jawalkar are actively involved in the activities of Department of Medical Education. The Department encourages the undergraduates to undertake ICMR -STS Projects and from 2019 to 2023 Department has 6 ICMR STS Projects. Seven of the faculty members have enrolled their name in PhD program.
