Overview

The department of Otorhinolaryngology was established in the year 1987 with an undergraduate course. The department was recognized for postgraduate courses in the year 1998. The total number of teaching faculty is 08, of which 2 are Professors and recognized PG teachers, 01 Associate professor and recognized PG teacher, three Assistant professors, and two Senior Residents. The total number of non-teaching staff is 2. The intake of MBBS seats is 200 and for post-graduate courses; 05 MS, 1 Ph.D. seats. The department also runs Fellowship in FESS and Micro ear surgery.

Department of Otorhinolaryngology

UG was recognized in 1992. Department of ENT started UG practical exam in 1994. We have state of art infrastructure with well-equipped OPD, minor OT & Operating microscopes & neurotology division since the inception. Fully air-conditioned, sound-treated two-room set up audiometry having Speech audiometry was present since 1993. We got an Impedance audiometer in 2001. BERA and OAE are there in the department since 2014. A full set of rigid Bronchoscopes with optical forceps were also procured during 1996. Karl Storz nasal telescopes of 00, 300, 700 with full set of functional endoscopic sinus surgery instruments & camera processor were equipped during 1996. Fiber optic bronchoscope with camera & processor was procured during 2007. We procured Zeiss Movina & Leica model microscope for microear surgery. We have Microdebrider for endoscopic sinus surgeries since 2013. We have procured computer-aided navigation system for endoscopic skull base surgeries in 2014 which only a few institutions in India have. We have a stroboscope for the voice lab. We procured an M4 navigation compatible handpiece for skull base surgeries in 2015.

We have an excellent departmental library from inception. Digital library was formed in 2006 with hundreds of CDs covering operating procedures & Power-point Presentations. We have continuous closed-circuit TV transmission in the OT of all the Operative procedures –open, endoscopic or microscopic. We project operations in the seminar room, a mini auditorium in the lecture hall since 2007. We have been conducting workshops since 2000. We were the first to conduct hands-on cadaver dissection – FESS & Endo-ear surgery in whole Karnataka during March 2007. We conducted an international CME & live ear surgery for deafness in collaboration with Rotary International in March 2007. We had Dr. Henning Hildman a famous Otologist from Germany as Chief Guest faculty. 35 patients were operated on during this free surgical camp. We organized five (SKUBA I-V) International Skull base surgery workshops. The guest faculty was Dr. Prepageran Narayanan, an International ENT & Skull Base Surgeon from University Malaya Medical Centre Kuala Lumpur. We have been doing many research projects starting from 1998, some of the research projects are completed and some are ongoing. We have two VGST funded projects in the department currently. Our faculty has presented many papers at different workshops & Conferences. Likewise, we have twelve publications in national and regional journals. Apart from ENT health care service, the dept. has conducted no less than 30 free health camps and free surgical camps. Under DDRC we are regularly conducting camps for the deaf patients across Vijayapura district we have done many deafness awareness camps at schools and surgery camps.

We have conducted Hands on cochlear implant & Temporal Bone Dissection Course in Jan 2020, & Otoview- Live Surgery and Temporal Bone Dissection on 18-03-2023 and 19-03-2023 by Eminent Otologist Dr. H Vijayendra. And also recently we have conducted Recent Trends in Management of HEAD and NECK MALIGNANCIES in collaboration with HCG Cancer Hospital Bengaluru on 11-11-2023.
