The area of the Pathology Department is 3540 feet square feet. There was just one head over the pathology and microbiology departments. In 1986, the department was founded. The current department has everything needed for both undergraduate and graduate studies (1966, 1978).

There are thirteen staff members in the department in total: eight professors, one associate professor, three assistant professors, and two senior residents.Every year, 13 MD candidates are admitted.

There are established divisions for the study of cytology, haematology, clinical pathology, and histopathology. With regard to diagnostic services, these different areas meet the demands of the KLE Charitable Hospital. In the Charitable Hospital, an autopsy room is also accessible, and the department has a room designated for performing pediatric autopsies.

The Central Laboratory of the Charitable Hospital manages routine clinical pathology, biochemistry, and hematology. Studies in microbiology and biochemistry. However, work on complicated and advanced cases, as well as histopathology, is done at college labs. This lab is manned by PGs and our teaching staff. The teaching staff teaches undergraduate, graduate, and related courses in addition to paramedical studies. Every two weeks, postgraduate programs are offered. For educational purposes, postgraduates are also assigned to state-of-the-art laboratories such as Anand Diagnostics and the National Institute of Mental Health and Sciences, Bangalore. They can keep up with new methods, quality assurance, and other topics thanks to these postings. Over the years, the Undergraduate and Postgraduate tests have generally produced positive outcomes. Additionally, the department's personnel assist The Dr. Prabhakar Kore Hospital & MRC in KLE is equipped with automated biochemical laboratory, automated haematological and histopathology laboratories, and blood bank facilities with component therapy. For training purposes, the postgraduates also cycle through these laboratories. The center of the department is the Departmental Museum. It is widely regarded as one of this region's greatest medical museums. It has 1401 specimens arranged methodically to aid postgraduates and undergraduates in comprehending anatomic pathology. For the benefit of postgraduate students, the department hosts autopsies, seminars, guest lectures, clinical case discussions, workshops, and slide seminars. For the past 37 years, the department has held annual CME programs. Distinguished honors such as the Excellence in Teaching Award and the Silver Headed Cane/plaque are also given to the experienced pathologists during the event. The feed back so far has been positive & encouraging. We have a fully furnished practical hall that can accommodate one hundred undergraduate students. The pupils always have access to our PG reading room. There are 183 books, dissertation collections, and related CDs in the departmental library. For the pupils, we have electronic instructional resources. Recently, a meditation room was constructed with the intention of practicing in-home meditation.

The histopathological section of the Department of Pathology stands as a cornerstone of diagnostic excellence, providing comprehensive examinations of resected specimens, including detailed fetal and organ autopsies, at an affordable cost to ensure accessibility for all patients. Notably, this section offers the critical service of intraoperative frozen section analysis, allowing for rapid, on-the-spot diagnoses during surgical procedures. This immediate feedback is invaluable for guiding surgical decisions, assessing margins, and contributing to successful patient outcomes. The dedication to precision in the histopathological section underscores the department's commitment to delivering high-quality care and facilitating accurate diagnoses that inform tailored treatment strategies.

The hematology section of the Department of Pathology is distinguished by its comprehensive diagnostic approach, offering a full spectrum of hematological examinations that include detailed analyses of urine and body fluids. Renowned for its affordability and swift turnaround times, this section ensures that crucial tests accessible to broad patient demographic. Advanced diagnostic techniques, such as High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) for precise variant analysis and Flow Cytometry for intricate cell profiling, are also available. The section prides itself on a hybrid methodology where automated machine screening provides efficiency and consistency, which is then complemented by meticulous manual examination to confirm results, ensuring the highest level of precision in patient diagnosis and care.

The cytology section of the Department of Pathology is a critical hub for early detection and diagnostic precision, offering a comprehensive suite of services such as Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology (FNAC), fluid cytology, and specialized tests including Pap smears, as well as urine, scrape, and imprint cytology. This section plays a pivotal role in cancer screening, particularly with its free-of-cost Pap smear testing, a proactive measure aimed at combating the rising incidence of cervical cancer. By removing financial barriers, the department encourages widespread screening, facilitating early diagnosis for a large number of patients. This initiative not only exemplifies the department’s commitment to community health but also reflects a broader mission to enhance patient care through accessible, high-quality diagnostic services.

The Blood Bank section under the Department of Pathology plays a crucial role in patient care, providing a vital link between donors and those in need of blood products. It offers sophisticated services including Single Donor Platelet (SDP) apheresis, an advanced procedure that selectively collects platelets from donors, greatly benefiting patients requiring platelet transfusion, such as those with thrombocytopenia or undergoing chemotherapy. Additionally, the Blood Bank ensures meticulous collection and storage of blood, adhering to stringent safety protocols to maintain the integrity and quality of blood products. This facility operates with a commitment to upholding the highest standards of practice, ensuring the availability of life-saving components for various medical interventions.
